CleanFUEL USA Announces Installation of Propane Autogas Refueling Infrastructure Equipment for 24 new Texas School Districts

Texas school districts embrace propane autogas, cutting nearly $1.2 million in annual school transportation costs and reducing environmental impact

GEORGETOWN, Texas –– August 16, 2012 – CleanFUEL USA, a leading supplier of propane autogas infrastructure and engine systems, today announced more than 37 new or expanded contracts with Texas independent school districts for propane autogas refueling infrastructure equipment. The contracts are affiliated with recent grants from the Department of Energy (DOE) for $12.6 million and $3.1 million from the State Energy Conservation Office (SECO) for vehicles and infrastructure. The grants are administered through the Railroad Commission of Texas.

CleanFUEL USA will provide new propane autogas refueling infrastructure equipment to several districts, which will support school buses running on propane autogas. Districts receiving installation of new equipment include: Austin Independent School District, Houston Independent School District and Arlington Independent School District.

With Texas lawmakers cutting public education financing by nearly $5.4 billion, school districts have been forced to make serious adjustments in several ways, such as increasing class sizes, reducing services and supplies, as well as the number of teachers, custodians, librarians and others. Some school districts are now selling advertising space on the sides of buses in an effort to redeem revenue, while others have even gone so far as removing bus transportation entirely.

“Watching Texas school districts realize the economic and environmental benefits of propane autogas has been extremely rewarding,” says Curtis Donaldson, CEO and founder of CleanFUEL USA. “Propane autogas continues to gain momentum across the country as fleet managers in both the private and public sectors do the math and realize it makes incredible sense to use a domestically-produced alternative fuel that costs less than gas and diesel and has a smaller environmental footprint.”

Propane autogas is the third most widely used transportation fuel globally, behind gasoline and diesel, and is proven to be a more attractive option from an economic and environmental standpoint. As the lowest greenhouse gas emitting fuel, propane autogas averages 40 to 50 percent less than gasoline and diesel per gallon. There are more than 52,000 autogas refueling stations and 17 million propane-powered vehicles worldwide.

Texas school districts previously working with CleanFUEL USA who received updated equipment include: Alvin ISD, Northside ISD, and Prosper ISD, who together saved roughly $858,000 last year in transportation costs through the use of propane autogas. Sheldon ISD, Conroe ISD and Humble ISD have saved more than a combined $130,000 in their first year. A full list of participating school districts can be viewed here.

CleanFUEL USA Announces Conversion of 53 School Buses to Propane Autogas for Dallas County Schools

In the past year, the school district has saved more than $1.5 million with propane autogas buses and it is expected to generate more savings with expansion of alternative fuel vehicles

GEORGETOWN, Texas--August 16, 2012--CleanFUEL USA, a leading supplier of propane autogas infrastructure and engine systems, today announced the completion of converting 53 type A school buses for Dallas County Schools (DCS) to propane autogas.

The project was funded through a $1 million grant from the North Central Texas Council of Governments' (NCTCOG) Clean Fleets North Texas program, which was made possible largely through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds received from the State Energy Conservation Office. "Through the Clean Fleets North Texas grant program, we were able to facilitate transitions to vehicles and fuels that help improve air quality in the Dallas-Fort Worth ozone nonattainment area while also reducing petroleum consumption" said Lori Clark, principal transportation planner with NCTCOG.

This grant also supports the efforts of the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) Clean Cities program, which is housed at NCTCOG. DFW Clean Cities was one of the first Clean Cities coalitions formed under the Energy Policy Act's provision for an organization that promotes the use of alternative fuels to lessen the U.S. dependence on foreign sources of petroleum. The DFW Clean Cities Coalition is a locally-based, private and public partnership group that works to advance the economic, environmental and energy security goals of the U.S. by supporting local decisions to adopt practices that contribute to the reduction of petroleum consumption in the transportation sector.

"One of Clean Cities main goals is to facilitate the deployment of alternative fuel vehicles in and around the DFW area," said Pamela Burns, DFW Clean Cities Coordinator. "CleanFUEL USA has been and continues to be a solid partner in the propane autogas market by helping Dallas-based organizations, such as Dallas County Schools, reduce their transportation costs while decreasing their environmental footprint."

There are more than 52,000 propane autogas refueling stations and 17 million propane-powered vehicles worldwide.

Dallas County Schools is the fourth largest Pupil Transportation Organization in the country. With more than 1,700 buses, 11 service centers and a transportation department staff of more than 1,800 employees, DCS transports approximately 60,000
Children to and from school safely each day. This district has been utilizing propane autogas as an alternative fuel for more than 10 years, saving approximately $1.5 million* in fuel costs annually. The new propane autogas buses are anticipated to save the school district more than $200,000 per year.

"The decision to convert additional buses to propane autogas was an easy one," said Tim Jones, executive analyst for DCS. "We have the infrastructure in place, making it a simple transition. We also live in the largest producing state of propane in the country. Therefore, we are helping our state economy, saving money for our taxpayers by reducing school transportation costs, and providing cleaner air for our students. It's hard to argue with not investing in more autogas transportation for our schools."

*Cost savings based on 1 million gallons per year and averaging 6 mpg; data derived between July 2011 and June 2012. Difference in fuel cost is comparing the cost of bulk gas vs. bulk LPG.
